So naturally this post about Quillan at TravelBite caught my eye. Here is an extract:<p /> Skiing in the winter, whitewater rafting in the summer or exploring the nearby Cathar Castles – there’s a host of activities to keep you occupied in the French town of Quillan all year round.<p />Situated at the foothills of the Pyrenees, not far from the Spanish border and about 70 miles to duty-free Andorra (the sixth smallest nation in Europe), Quillan is a picturesque, rustic town with a population of a few thousand or so.<p /> According to local tradition, the town got its name from the three craggy hills, the Trois Quilles (the Three Skittles) which surround it.<p />As it is located in the of region Languedoc-Roussillon , the town is within short driving distance to many majestic Cathar Castles, which were erected nearly a thousand years ago to protect the Cathars from invasions from the north. Some of the castles are rundown, but others like Carcassonne have been well kept and still serve as popular tourist attractions.<p /> Carcassonne city, which is a 45-minute drive from Quillan, is the only fortified town in Europe still inhabited. It is also home to the closest airport, followed by Perpignan, a large town near the Mediterranean coast, which is an hour’s drive away. France Travel Guide have produced a comprehensive article about each wine region. Here is an extract about the wines to be found in the Loire Valley.<p /> As France is the country where winemaking and viticulture first was refined and the French defined many different types of wine production, regions of France are now just as synonymous with what wines come from there as what the scenery is like. France is the birthplace of modern winemaking and serves as a model for wine production internationally. Even though it’s only about the size of Texas, <strong><em>France produces between 7 and 8 billion bottles per year</em></strong> and has the second-largest total vineyard area in the world.<p /><b>Loire Valley</b><p /> While this area southwest of Paris has long been known as the former stomping grounds of French Kings, the <a href="http://www.1st-for-french-property.co.uk/blog/visit-the-loire-valley/">Loire Valley</a> is also France’s third largest wine producing region and is known for its sparkling wines – it’s France’s second largest region for sparkling wine after Champagne – and for its lighter reds.<p /> <i>Whites</i><p />Loire Valley white wines are perfect for spring and summer, as their fruity aromas and acidity make them lighter.<p /><i>Rosés</i><p />The slightly sweet, pink hued rosés that come from the Loire are also known as a perfect summer wine and have a refreshing flavor. Rosés can be the perfect pre-dinner apéritif.<p /> <i>Reds</i><p />Loire Valley reds can be either lighter or full-bodied, but they do have a reputation as being a generally smoother, lighter red than those from Burgundy or Bordeaux. The lighter ones can be served chilled at a summer barbecue, and the fuller bodied are excellent for autumn, or as a slightly lighter alternative to more traditional winter wines.<p /> <i>Sparkling (fines bulles)</i><p />Because Champagne only comes from the Champagne region, the sparkling wine from the Loire Valley is called fines bulles. However, they produce some great sparkling wines that tend to be on the crisper, drier side, much like the whites from this region.<p /> <i>Sweet</i><p />The Loire Valley is known for its sweet wines that make for a great apéritif or dessert wine. Limousin is one of the 27 regions of France. It is composed of three départements: Corrèze, Creuse and the Haute-Vienne.<br /> </p><p>My France à mo has an interesting article about the Limousin - here is an extract: Often dubbed the French Lake District, located to the west of the Massif Central, Limousin can really be best described as the heart of France. Follow our tips to planning a swift and comfortable journey:</p> <ul><li>On Autoroutes, or A roads, there are numerous attractive rest areas or Aires, ranging from picnic/toilet/petrol stops to full-scale service stations with restaurants and shops selling local produce. If you won&#39;t be arriving at your holiday property until the evening, when local shops are likely to be closed, services are a good place to purchase something for supper.<p />  </li><li>Main non-motorway routes or routes nationales are identified as N roads. A good choice if you want a break from motorway driving or to see more small towns, villages and scenery. Road numbering can be confusing so best to follow destination signs.<p />  </li><li>Avoid seasonal congestion at the beginning and end of August when most French people holiday en masse. Also avoid if possible the week around July 14th and around August 15th, both big national holidays. HGV&#39;s are banned from the roads on Sundays all year round so motorways are quieter on this day outside seasonal peaks.<p />  </li><li>Direction signs starting with Bis indicate bison futé, a holiday route avoiding crowded roads. Worth taking at busy times like summer Saturdays. Maps showing these alternative routes are available free from garages.<p />  </li><li>If your holiday property is situated in the west of France, you could save hours of driving time by taking the ferry to Cherbourg or Le Havre rather than the shorter Dover to Calais route. It’s called the Pont du Gard, and it’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Both the Pont du Gard and the surrounding countryside are absolutely stunning - and New York Habitat highly recommends putting the area on your “must see” list for your next vacation in the South of France.<p /> If you’ve never heard of it before, the Pont du Gard is the masterpiece of the ancient Roman aqueducts that wound its way through the region. A recent redevelopment project has made the Pont du Gard site easily accessible from the highway while appearing to be a hidden oasis now that it has been closed to vehicle traffic. Spend the day touring the museum and the Pont itself, either on your own or with a guide; pack a picnic and dine on the banks or the Gard river; or, bring your swim trunks and cool off with an afternoon dip!<p /> You might see many names and other markings etched into the massive stones of the structure. The tax year is the calendar year and there is no PAYE in France, so all income must be included in your annual tax return.<p />The tax declaration for 2011 income is to be submitted by the end of May 2012.  Those making their first declaration will have to obtain the forms from their local tax office.<p />All income declared will be subject to income tax (“impôt sur le revenu”) and “social taxes” (“contributions sociales”). The latter is an extra tax on most sources of income, which is used to finance the health and other services, and is a set percentage of what you declare.<p />On the other hand, income tax is on a banded system and involves a complicated calculation. This is because different allowances are given for different types of income. For instance, pension income is only taxed on 90% of its value, up to certain limits. European cars tend to be rented for a 24-hour period,(with a 59 minute grace period), though for most people looking to travel by car through the France, the most economical option it to rent a car by the week with unlimited mileage. Daily rates for car rentals in France can be quite high, so renting a car for the week is probably the best way to go.<p />     2. Look into rail-and-drive passes at car rental companies. These passes allow you to rent a car one day at a time at one-seventh the cheap weekly rate.<p />    3. Book your rental car in France in advance as part of your travel package. Very little, you would think – the fields are empty, the trees are bare, there’s nothing but rain and a dull grey sky. You’d be surprised. Here are some of the delights we found at our Norman market at the end of December.<p /> Boxes and boxes of the freshest oysters, only a squirt of lemon needed. Holly and mistletoe grow everywhere in Normandy. Look up any old tree in the winter and what looks like a messy kind of birds nest is probably mistletoe. And there is a whole forest of holly, la Forêt d’Eu, in the Seine-Maritime. But if you don’t have time to collect your own, you can buy some at market.<p /> The pretty coquilles Saint-Jacques are a Normandy specialty which have been awarded the prestigious “label rouge” in recognition of their quality. Here is an extract:<p /> Tip #1: arrive 30+ minutes before your scheduled departure<p />The name of your station is printed on your ticket; show that to your driver so there&#39;s no confusion about which station you need to get to. Plan to arrive at the train station 30 minutes or more before your scheduled departure time—SNCF advises that the larger the station, the earlier you should arrive. Be aware that the French trains usually depart on time and they will not wait for you.<p /> #2: check the departure board for your departure platform<p />Check the board to confirm your assigned platform and then allow a few minutes more reach the quai (platform) from which your train departs. Navigating your way through the crowds on busy days can be problematic in some large stations, especially if you haven’t allowed enough time and are toting baggage. Make certain you’re on the correct side of the platform to head in your desired direction.<p /> #3: validate your ticket before boarding, just to be safe<p />You will be expected to composter (validate) your own ticket with a time-stamp punch at a self-service ticket validation machine usually located in several places, such as at the start of the quai, on the platform, in the waiting area. Look for the yellow validator that reads: &quot;&#39;Compostez votre billet&quot; or &quot;Compostage de billet.&quot;  Modern ticket validators are usually yellow, or in some cases orange. Chamonix was a sleepy Savoyard village nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc until 1741 when William Windham and Richard Pococke arrived in search of adventure. The two young British aristocrats clambered up the local glacier, explored the nearby mountains and subsequently penned such a romantic picture of the region in their journals that they fired the imagination of their fellow countrymen. For the next century and more—Anglo-French wars permitting—Chamonix became an essential stop for English travelers making the Grand Tour of Europe. Alpine tourism had arrived and Chamonix became its capital.<p />Fast forward to the 21st century and, despite the rise of other winter resorts, Chamonix remains the <em>grande dame </em>of the Alps.
