Blame it on the Brits at Chamonix

The Brits seem to be getting blamed for everything this month! Hey, we can take it on the chin. Perhaps Europe needs to have a rethink? Sarko and Muckel (sorry) have re-elections next year so they need to do some grand standing but this Euro fiasco is going to end in disaster, mark my words.

Chamonix

Anyhow let see how France Today is blaming the Brits in Chamonix!

Blame it on the Brits. Chamonix was a sleepy Savoyard village nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc until 1741 when William Windham and Richard Pococke arrived in search of adventure. The two young British aristocrats clambered up the local glacier, explored the nearby mountains and subsequently penned such a romantic picture of the region in their journals that they fired the imagination of their fellow countrymen. For the next century and more—Anglo-French wars permitting—Chamonix became an essential stop for English travelers making the Grand Tour of Europe. Alpine tourism had arrived and Chamonix became its capital.

Fast forward to the 21st century and, despite the rise of other winter resorts, Chamonix remains the grande dame of the Alps. Windham and Pococke's glacier—the Mer de Glace—is still there, winding its majestic way down the Mont Blanc massif, and so too is the magnificent setting that once inspired poets like Shelley and Byron—the latter declaring Mont Blanc to be the "monarch of mountains". Novelist Charles Dickens had great expectations when he visited in 1847 and he was not disappointed. "Mont Blanc and the Valley of Chamonix, and the Sea of Ice, and all the wonders of the most wonderful place are above and beyond one's wildest expectation," he enthused. "I cannot imagine anything in nature more stupendous or sublime."

An American in Aix-en-Provence over Christmas

Christmas is nearly with us and this year 4 million Brits are heading out of the country with some going to France. Our neighbours are off to Languedoc-Roussillon!

The blog at Food Lover's Odyssey describes how an American is enjoying Christmas in foreign climes in lovely Aix en Provence.

Being an American living abroad certainly has its ups & downs, but undoubtedly one of the high points of residing in the beautiful land of France is the chance to experience the Christmas season... à la française.

What France may lack in splashy decorations (believe me, I really do miss my sparkly, pot-bellied Santa from home), it more than makes up for in simple sophistication.  Holiday traditions in Provence, as in other French regions, are quite a subdued affair - full of elegant pine trees (les petits sapins), lots of twinkling white lights (think woodsy meets Coco Chanel), and thankfully, a Christmas market in almost every city.

Which brings us to perhaps one of the most quintessentially Provençal cities of all: Aix-en-Provence.  It's difficult not to fall under the spell of this charming university town which somehow manages to do "high-brow" and "stone-washed village" all at the same time.

Having visited this southern gem on many an occasion, I can safely say Aix really shines during the holiday season - and nowhere is this more apparent than at the annual Christmas market.  This past weekend, I braved the somewhat less-charming holiday crowds to shop the "snowy" chalets lining the main boulevard of Aix: Cours Mirabeau.

Top Town lists are very popular but very subjective! Personal preference can be easily swayed.

New York Habitat Blog are running a series of posts on Top Towns in South of France; so far they have covered:

No 3 on their list is one of my personal favourites; in this extract they give you a flavour of Aix-en-Provence .....

Aix en Provence

Once the capital of Provence, Aix-en-Provence has maintained the majesty and style that comes with being an economic and cultural center. Cours Mirabeau is the center of this charming town. This tree-lined avenue is the perfect place to take a scenic stroll or to watch passersby from one of the many cafés.

Home to several art schools and universities Aix-en-Provence has become the site of several annual festivals such as the International Festival of Lyric Arts and Music and The Dance Festival.

Paris Top 10 Monuments

Not sure what to include on your Paris itinerary - yes, there is so much to see. But if you are on a short visit then here are some suggestions from girlsguidetoparis.com

Top 10 Monuments in Paris

1. Eiffel Tower
We love it especially when it twinkles at night.

2. Notre Dame
You have to be impressed by a nearly 850-year-old church with these intricate carvings. Light a candle inside—you will feel inspired.

3. The Pyramid and the Louvre
Is there anything more beautiful than the contrast between the sparkling Pyramid, by I. M. Pei, and the 12th-century stones of the Louvre? You don’t even have to enter the museum to appreciate this monument.

4. Sainte Chapelle
The stained-glass windows will make your jaw drop!

5. Luxembourg Gardens
Not only for the beautiful gardens, ponds and sculptures, but for the Musée du Luxembourg and the rotating photo shows that are often displayed outside on the fence that surrounds the park.

6. Palais Royal
This is a must-see. Louis XIV spent his childhood at the Palais, Colette had an apartment here—this place just oozes Parisian beauty. Le Grand Véfour, the restaurant where Napoleon and Josephine dined, is still going strong under the arches of the palace. We simply love the gardens and the serenity of the Palais Royal.

7. Napoleon’s Tomb and Les Invalides
A wonderful war museum and an over-the-top, terribly grand resting place for le roi de France. The beauty of the gold-domed roof on the church and the tranquil gardens of Les Invalides always strikes us.

8. Place de la Concorde
A busy intersection with a spectacular 3,300-year-old Egyptian obelisk at its center. This place is home to a lot of history, including the decapitation of Marie Antoinette. Plus, you’ll find one of the most impressive hotels in the world here, the Hôtel de Crillon.

9. The Panthéon
Originally a church, now a monument to French intellectuals. It’s a beautiful and quiet oasis.

10. Arc de Triomphe
We especially like going to the top.
