Last Call for Coffee at French Bistros?

The Bistro seems such an integral part of French life - or is it? Well the latest figures would suggest otherwise:

In the 1960s there were 600,00 bistros in France, now there are just 35,000 with many more under threat of closure.

Why has this happened? Causes include the smoking ban, a drink-driving crackdown, the arrival of supermarkets and a widespread reliance on mobile phones and computers; this has dealt bistro culture a death blow.

The French Government says that bistros must move with the times, and offer more services.

Long live the Bistro!
