Leave the sightseeing to Paris – the South of France is where the real living is done. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s hedonistic; from coast to coast, you can clearly see people going about their daily business. But spend even a day in the south, and the message comes through loud and clear: We do things a little differently down here. It’s slower, warmer and there’s always a seat in the sun at your local café.

Unique Experiences in the South of France

If you’re looking for something different for your next visit to France, here are five fun things that should coax you out of the never-ending tourist conga line of Paris.

The five places highlighted are:

  • See a concert in Nîmes
  • Surf in Biarritz
  • Go local in Saint-Tropez
  • Do nothing in Nice
  • Make perfume in Grasse

For example, Go local in Saint-Tropez
If you’re looking for an off-season spot on the French Riviera, you can’t do better than St. Tropez. The paparazzi are gone, the clubs are closed, and other than a few cruise day-trippers it’s just you and the year-round residents, who are downright giddy about having the place to themselves again. Make sure to visit the Mariner’s Cemetery – some of the best real estate on the cape – and a late-afternoon drink at the cherry-red Sénéquier café is a must.
