A Load of Bull in France?

Catalonia’s decision to proscribe bullfights has less to do with sentiment towards animals than with regional assertiveness. Nothing wrong with that, of course: as a localist, I’m all for provinces and regions drawing up their own laws. But don’t make the mistake of extrapolating too widely, as the BBC has, from a decision based largely on Catalan particularism. Bullfighting is not in decline in the rest of Spain. Ticket sales were rising year-on-year until the downturn hit.

Tauromachy has never been as popular in Catalonia as in the rest of the peninsula. As long ago as 1931, Hemingway observed that “although bullfighting flourishes in Barcelona, it is on a fake basis because the public that attends goes as to a circus for excitement and entertainment.” Papa put this down to a difference in character: Catalans, he believed, were too mercantile and practical a people to be much interested in death. Lacking the morbidity of Castilians, they rarely understood the poetry of the rite being performed on the sands. Missing the tragedy, they saw only the gore, and so were revolted.

There may, for all I know, be something in this analysis. Certainly Catalonia has never produced a matador of the first rank. But the odd thing is that, across the border in French Catalonia, toreo is more popular then ever. True, bullfighting in France generally has enjoyed something of a renaissance over the past 15 years, but there is more to it than that. In the border villages of Rousillon, taurine festivals are drenched with Catalan imagery: folk songs, picaresque costumes, the ubiquitous red-and-gold bars of the flag. The little town of Céret now hosts one of the most important festivals of the season, its people proudly proclaiming themselves “Catalans i aficionados”.

There is a pleasing symmetry in all this. North of the Pyrenees, French Catalans celebrate bullfighting in order to flaunt their distance from Paris; south of the Pyrenees, Spanish Catalans ban it in order to flaunt their distance from Madrid. Vive la différence! ¡Viva la diferencia! Visca la diferència!

A Load of Boules

According to Welsh boules champion Neil Dobbins – who has played in nine European boules championships and two world cups – there is a set of easy pétanque techniques that could help you hold your own on the market-squares of Provence this summer.

First of all, says Dobbins, you will need to cast aside your British timidity and cultivate a bit of Gallic bile. "If a Brit was to go abroad and play in the south of France," says Dobbins, "they would just constantly try to get closer to the jack" – a tactic that the French consider defensive. Instead, you should play with outright belligerence: ignore the jack, and "just aggressively attack the opposition's boules and hit them off the piste".

Honing your throwing technique is also a vital step towards total boules assimilation. Stand front-on, says Dobbins, bend your knees, and crouch down slightly. Now "cup the ball in your hand with the fingers closed", swing your arm back and forth like a pendulum, and then release it out the back of your hand – flexing your wrist "so that it puts back-spin on the ball".

Failing to adapt your game to different kinds of surfaces will clearly out you as a rosbif – so pay close attention to the condition of the piste you are playing on. If it is quite a smooth piste, just roll the ball along the ground – "but you don't want to put too much pace on it," advises Dobbins. "If it's a rough piste with big stones, you might want to give the ball more elevation, and put a bit more power into the shot to lift it up in the air."

And lastly, says Scottish number one Robbie Stronach, remember to sip "a wee bit of Pernod" in between throws. The aniseed-based spirit is a staple drink of the hardened boules player; a pint of Stella is apparently no substitute.

Mad Cow Disease: Hikers get the hoof in Pyrenees?

Sorry it is silly season again ....

The aggressive behaviour has been blamed on the season and holidaymakers visiting the region during the summer months have been warned to keep well away from cows.

A police spokesman said that Pyrenean cows were "generally of the Béarnaise and Blonde d'Aquitaine races" were particularly ferocious during the summer when they have their calves with them, according to the Times.

But there has been a backlash against tourists among locals, who believe the cows are being harassed.

"You shouldn't go annoying the cows on the pretext that you're on holiday," one resident wrote on an internet chatroom discussion board. "They were quite at home in their field." "Some of these tourists and walkers don't respect anything," said another: "They trample on flowers and mountain plants and get on cows' nerves."

For a more serious look at the Midi-Pyrenees.
