Blame it on the Brits at Chamonix

The Brits seem to be getting blamed for everything this month! Hey, we can take it on the chin. Perhaps Europe needs to have a rethink? Sarko and Muckel (sorry) have re-elections next year so they need to do some grand standing but this Euro fiasco is going to end in disaster, mark my words.

Chamonix

Anyhow let see how France Today is blaming the Brits in Chamonix!

Blame it on the Brits. Chamonix was a sleepy Savoyard village nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc until 1741 when William Windham and Richard Pococke arrived in search of adventure. The two young British aristocrats clambered up the local glacier, explored the nearby mountains and subsequently penned such a romantic picture of the region in their journals that they fired the imagination of their fellow countrymen. For the next century and more—Anglo-French wars permitting—Chamonix became an essential stop for English travelers making the Grand Tour of Europe. Alpine tourism had arrived and Chamonix became its capital.

Fast forward to the 21st century and, despite the rise of other winter resorts, Chamonix remains the grande dame of the Alps. Windham and Pococke's glacier—the Mer de Glace—is still there, winding its majestic way down the Mont Blanc massif, and so too is the magnificent setting that once inspired poets like Shelley and Byron—the latter declaring Mont Blanc to be the "monarch of mountains". Novelist Charles Dickens had great expectations when he visited in 1847 and he was not disappointed. "Mont Blanc and the Valley of Chamonix, and the Sea of Ice, and all the wonders of the most wonderful place are above and beyond one's wildest expectation," he enthused. "I cannot imagine anything in nature more stupendous or sublime."

An American in Aix-en-Provence over Christmas

Christmas is nearly with us and this year 4 million Brits are heading out of the country with some going to France. Our neighbours are off to Languedoc-Roussillon!

The blog at Food Lover's Odyssey describes how an American is enjoying Christmas in foreign climes in lovely Aix en Provence.

Being an American living abroad certainly has its ups & downs, but undoubtedly one of the high points of residing in the beautiful land of France is the chance to experience the Christmas season... à la française.

What France may lack in splashy decorations (believe me, I really do miss my sparkly, pot-bellied Santa from home), it more than makes up for in simple sophistication.  Holiday traditions in Provence, as in other French regions, are quite a subdued affair - full of elegant pine trees (les petits sapins), lots of twinkling white lights (think woodsy meets Coco Chanel), and thankfully, a Christmas market in almost every city.

Which brings us to perhaps one of the most quintessentially Provençal cities of all: Aix-en-Provence.  It's difficult not to fall under the spell of this charming university town which somehow manages to do "high-brow" and "stone-washed village" all at the same time.

Having visited this southern gem on many an occasion, I can safely say Aix really shines during the holiday season - and nowhere is this more apparent than at the annual Christmas market.  This past weekend, I braved the somewhat less-charming holiday crowds to shop the "snowy" chalets lining the main boulevard of Aix: Cours Mirabeau.

Top Towns in South of France: Aix en Provence

Top Town lists are very popular but very subjective! Personal preference can be easily swayed.

New York Habitat Blog are running a series of posts on Top Towns in South of France; so far they have covered:

No 3 on their list is one of my personal favourites; in this extract they give you a flavour of Aix-en-Provence .....

Aix en Provence

Once the capital of Provence, Aix-en-Provence has maintained the majesty and style that comes with being an economic and cultural center. Cours Mirabeau is the center of this charming town. This tree-lined avenue is the perfect place to take a scenic stroll or to watch passersby from one of the many cafés.

Home to several art schools and universities Aix-en-Provence has become the site of several annual festivals such as the International Festival of Lyric Arts and Music and The Dance Festival.

Paris Top 10 Monuments

Not sure what to include on your Paris itinerary - yes, there is so much to see. But if you are on a short visit then here are some suggestions from girlsguidetoparis.com

Top 10 Monuments in Paris

1. Eiffel Tower
We love it especially when it twinkles at night.

2. Notre Dame
You have to be impressed by a nearly 850-year-old church with these intricate carvings. Light a candle inside—you will feel inspired.

3. The Pyramid and the Louvre
Is there anything more beautiful than the contrast between the sparkling Pyramid, by I. M. Pei, and the 12th-century stones of the Louvre? You don’t even have to enter the museum to appreciate this monument.

4. Sainte Chapelle
The stained-glass windows will make your jaw drop!

5. Luxembourg Gardens
Not only for the beautiful gardens, ponds and sculptures, but for the Musée du Luxembourg and the rotating photo shows that are often displayed outside on the fence that surrounds the park.

6. Palais Royal
This is a must-see. Louis XIV spent his childhood at the Palais, Colette had an apartment here—this place just oozes Parisian beauty. Le Grand Véfour, the restaurant where Napoleon and Josephine dined, is still going strong under the arches of the palace. We simply love the gardens and the serenity of the Palais Royal.

7. Napoleon’s Tomb and Les Invalides
A wonderful war museum and an over-the-top, terribly grand resting place for le roi de France. The beauty of the gold-domed roof on the church and the tranquil gardens of Les Invalides always strikes us.

8. Place de la Concorde
A busy intersection with a spectacular 3,300-year-old Egyptian obelisk at its center. This place is home to a lot of history, including the decapitation of Marie Antoinette. Plus, you’ll find one of the most impressive hotels in the world here, the Hôtel de Crillon.

9. The Panthéon
Originally a church, now a monument to French intellectuals. It’s a beautiful and quiet oasis.

10. Arc de Triomphe
We especially like going to the top.

Eating the Mediterranean Style, and Why You Must Incorporate It

The Mediterranean diet eating routine is a dietary approach influenced through the diet particular to Crete, Greece and Southern Italy. Though a great deal of importance gets put regarding the diet being plant based, there has been quite a lot of evidence suggesting the key componenet with the eating regimen is olive oil. Christmas in Provence

The season of festive cheer is upon us. And after the last year about time for some happiness and celebration. So how is Xmas celebrated in France, and especially Provence? Here are some extracts from a post from the blog at www.marseille-provence.info

Stand by for a long Christmas season - known locally as La Calendale - in Provence. People here love to celebrate, and for as long as possible, and the Calendale runs almost two months. It embraces a host of vibrant and curious traditions, of which these are the most popular.

The Great Supper and the 13 Desserts

The evening of the 24 December, or Réveillon, is the occasion for the Great Supper or Gros Souper, followed by the 13 Desserts. Click here to read more about Christmas meals in Provence.
The Christmas Log

This meal may sometimes be preceded by the lighting of the Christmas Log, or Bûche de Noël. According to this ancient tradition, a log, preferably from a fruit tree, is selected and anointed three times with mulled wine by the oldest member of the family, who then, along with the youngest, consigns it to the flames. It should burn for three days and the ashes kept a a remedy for illness or to bring good fortune. This tradition is called lou cacho fio in provençal.

Places to See in Burgundy

5150798640_2fc5a13f88.jpg

Photo of Beaune by francisco.j.gonzalez

On our annual trip to our home on the south coast, we often passed through Burgundy. Usually we stopped near Beaune as we loved this town with its glazed tile roofs. But there is so much to Burgundy.

FranceTravelGuide have a great post on Burgundy; here is an extract: What are some places to visit in Burgundy?

Dijon—Yes, home of the mustard. Dijon is one of France’s gastronomic capitals (along with Lyon), and has a wide variety of sights from pretty much every era starting from about a thousand years ago.
Autun—If you thought a thousand years was a long time ago, then get ready for your mind to be blown in Autun, home to its original Roman gates and other Roman sights.
Auxuerre—This is where you’ll see the half-timbered homes from all the travel brochures.
Beaune—Wine, wine and more wine. All the wine.
Mâcon–Mâcon on the River Saône is the gateway to the south, Lyon and the Mediterranean, so it’s a must-see on any road trip.
Vézelay—This town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries – namely to visit the Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene, which is built, as so many things are, on Roman ruins.

Going to France in December? Video

FranceTravelGuide.com have an interesting article about Going to France in December. Most of the suggestions are to chilly locations so wrap up well.

While you may not immediately think of it as being a great December travel destination, the fabulous Christmas markets, sparkling cities and snow blanketed ski towns make France at this time of year a a beautiful place to go. Combine that with the fact that France is a bargain for tourists during December, and suddenly France is a magical (albeit chilly) place.

Suggestions include:
1. Strasbourg Christmas Market
2. Fête des Lumières in Lyon
3. Christmas Mass in Rouen or Paris
4. Christmas Lights of Paris
5. Skiing at Val Thorens, Tignes or Chamonix

Describing the Strasbourg Christmas Market: As the oldest (and largest) Christmas market in France, this market has been going strong for an unbelievable 431 years. If you are like me who was born and raised in the American west and where the oldest thing around dates back maybe 100 years, this centuries long tradition is nothing short of impressive.

The five are:

1. Villa de Rothschild
2. Matisse Chapel
3. Picasso Museum
4. Giverny
5. Musee D’Orsay

It describes Villa de Rothschild .... Part museum, part life-sized doll’s house, this is every girl’s childhood dream realized. Around 1905, Beatrice de Rothschild, member of a wealthy family and wife to a wealthy husband, decided that she wanted a place to house her art collection, porcelain, costumes, and dolls. She decorated the mansion in pink, lace, and vibrant fabrics, and the house boasts a costume room, a tearoom, her bedroom, and nine gardens wrapping around a giant courtyard, each garden representing a different part of the world. The entire structure is designed to look like the bow of a ship so that she could have the illusion that she was traveling forever.

The Charms of Annecy

2527567987_4f749381a4.jpg

The Ski season is striking up with many ski resorts waiting for some early snow falls in the French Alps to attract visitors.

Saturday afternoon in Annecy. Joggers crisscross the Jardins de l’Europe park. Cyclists pedal around sections of the huge Annecy lake. A few brave souls kayak across the glassy surface while a swimmer perfects his butterfly stroke. Nothing unusual for an active mountain city, except that the mercury has hit 28° F and ankle-deep snow carpets the ground. The occasional cross-country skier even manages to glide across le paquier, a sprawling pasture along the lake.

The capital of France’s Haute Savoie department cultivates contrasts. Severe mountains jut up from the banks of lakeside tranquility. Rib-sticking fondue flirts with delicate freshwater fish like char and féra on the menus of local restaurants. While only some 50,000 inhabitants call Annecy home, the small city has Olympic-sized ambitions—it’s a candidate to host the 2018 winter games.

Unique Experiences in the South of France

4752357098_4b18f8b048.jpg

Check out the Wanderfly blog - who articulate "Forget Paris! Five Unique Experiences in the South of France"

Leave the sightseeing to Paris – the South of France is where the real living is done. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s hedonistic; from coast to coast, you can clearly see people going about their daily business. But spend even a day in the south, and the message comes through loud and clear: We do things a little differently down here. It’s slower, warmer and there’s always a seat in the sun at your local café.

Unique Experiences in the South of France

If you’re looking for something different for your next visit to France, here are five fun things that should coax you out of the never-ending tourist conga line of Paris.

The five places highlighted are:

  • See a concert in Nîmes
  • Surf in Biarritz
  • Go local in Saint-Tropez
  • Do nothing in Nice
  • Make perfume in Grasse

For example, Go local in Saint-Tropez
If you’re looking for an off-season spot on the French Riviera, you can’t do better than St. Tropez. The paparazzi are gone, the clubs are closed, and other than a few cruise day-trippers it’s just you and the year-round residents, who are downright giddy about having the place to themselves again. Make sure to visit the Mariner’s Cemetery – some of the best real estate on the cape – and a late-afternoon drink at the cherry-red Sénéquier café is a must.

Lonely Planet’s Top 10 regions for 2012 includes Poitou-Charentes

If you forget to think regionally you could miss some of the world’s best travel spots. Here are Lonely Planet’s picks of the regions to put on your map.

# 10 With quiet country roads wending through vine-striped hills and wild stretches of coastal sands interspersed with misty islands, the Atlantic coast is where the French get back to nature. Much more laid-back than the Med (but with almost as much sunshine) and ideally suited to family holidays, this is a place where you can slow the pace right down. And there are numerous ways in which to do this. You could spend a morning quietly greeting curious ducks as you kayak down the glowing green canals, rivers and streams of the Marais Poitevin. You could cycle over the lazy landscapes of the dreamy Île de Ré or raise a glass in the pretty town of Cognac. Or soak up the salty air of the white city, La Rochelle, after exploring its fascinating museums and breathtaking aquarium. Poitou-Charentes is far from undiscovered – French tourists have been flocking here for years – but aside from the city of La Rochelle (an increasingly popular weekend break destination thanks to arrival of budget airlines), the area is woefully under-visited by foreigners. – Stuart Butler

Tour of Chartres

Interesting post and photos about Chartres in the EuroTravelogue.

However, Chartres is quoted as a village! Must be an American visiting a little ole village!

Located about 90 kilometers or 60 miles southwest of Paris, the village of Chartres is steeped in history and its main attraction—Notre Dame de Chartres, the village’s medieval cathedral dominating its skyline and seen from just about every vantage point throughout the town. Even more impressive is your first glimpse of the cathedral upon approach from the major roadways. Suddenly, this colossal edifice looms on the horizon in stark contrast to the blue skies, and foreshadowing all that surrounds her. Truly, it is a spectacular sight filling you with anticipation and excitement as the village draws near. Whether you’re religious or not, historians, scholars and journalists alike, not to mention the tourists, will rejoice in their visit to this unforgettable cathedral.

Nuts about France?

South-west France has a special walnut route, and the nuts are brand-protected by an AOC appellation just like French wines. Near the chateau-topped village of Castelnaud, there’s even a museum devoted to walnut culture.

The Dordogne does far more with its walnuts than simply attack them with nutcrackers and stick them into a bowl. Walnut oil is for salad dressings—it adds a hint of sweetness—and it’s also used as cooking oil. There are walnut cakes, breads and crunchy macaroon-style biscuits. You can drink walnuts too: walnut wine, liqueurs, aperitifs and  digestifs. The alcoholic base for the green walnuts that get picked in mid-June is usually red wine, brandy or eau de vie.

Not all is in Green in France's Countryside

One of the striking features whilst driving through France's countryside is the diverse nature of the landscapes, flora and fauna.

But not all is green in France's garden according to the Guardian ...

Some wild flowers have already vanished from the French countryside. Pheasant's eye, cornflower, corncockle and Venus's looking glass are getting rare. The environment ministry is preparing a plan to preserve these plants, whose life cycle is closely linked to the harvest.

"All over Europe the situation is the same, with these species in serious decline," says Amélie Coantic, at the ministry's wildlife department. "Out of 102 varieties identified in France, 52 are under threat and seven have already disappeared."

For thousands of years they flourished beside wheat and rye and other cereals, but they have not been able to withstand intensive farming. Although they are hardly competitive with the main crop, they have long been treated as weeds.

Le Poët-Laval is nestled in the Jabron valley amid lavender and wheat fields some twenty kilometres from Montélimar. French Cafe Life

What is so special about France? I remember sitting at a Cafe sipping a Chocolat near the Eiffel Tower with my partner. It is an occasion that we frequently recall. This is a typical memory of France, and amplifies French life. France Today explores Cafe society in France ....

Sitting at a French café sipping an express, watching people, overhearing conversations—it’s always magic, no matter how often it is repeated. Is it the coffee, is it the café, is it the entire experience, replete with the waft of cigarette smoke if the day is fine and your table is outside?

It’s all of the above, and more. It’s the little packet of sugar that sits next to the cup, vying for space with the chocolate covered almond or the Belgian spice cookie called spéculoos that some cafés serve alongside. It’s the server who bends over to take your order and asks, with a certain intimacy that might be reserved just for you, Madame? Monsieur?

The Forgotten Region of Alsace Video

Alsace is located on the eastern border of France surrounded on the French side by Lorraine and Franche Comte. Its isolation on the eastern border makes it a rather forgotten region of France but has plenty of history to entice the visitor.

Alsace boasts Europe's highest concentration of feudal castles, bearing witness to its turbulent history. Without a doubt the most famous of these is the Haut Koenigsbourg castle which is one of France's most frequently visited monuments. Alsace has more than 400 ruined castles, including the recently restored Hohlandsbourg castle.

Camping in France - choose Normandy

Normandy Photo by Greenwich Photography

Camping is a delight in France - great campsites, good weather in the Summer (especially in the South) and a chance to enjoy rural France away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

But where to choose in France? You have a wide choice.

A Taste of France proposes Normandy ...

Not to be missed! When you camp in Normandy, you will discover a countryside that is so densely filled with history that you can bike from village to village and find something unique in every single one. Only time will be lacking. In Normandy, with its rich history of gastronomy, you will feast on apples, and cream, sea food and cider. Food is everywhere. From three star restaurants to tiny little cafes, there is something for every palate and budget. You may chose to cook your own food over a gas stove at your campsite and then you will discover the joys of bountiful markets and the oh-so-tempting epiceries (delicatessens) with their trays of quiches, savories and desserts. Even in Normandy, one cannot eat all day (though we might be tempted to do so).

The Best Cream for Age Spots Is Actually One That Will Get Rid Of Patches Naturally

Obtaining the best cream for age spots is way more challenging than you may initially realize. There is no place in France called Provence((tag:Provence)

Yes, quite true there is no place called Provence - but heck Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur is a mouthful so not surprisingly it is often shortened to Provence.

However France Travel Guide takes us to task!

The official name for the southeastern-most region of France is Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. As the name suggests, that covers a lot of ground – from its western border with the Languedoc-Roussilon region to its eastern border with Italy, and from the Mediterranean Sea in the south to a lot farther north than you’d expect. Within this region are the administrative départements of Var, Vaucluse, Bouches-du-Rhône, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes and Hautes-Alpes.

Some consider Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône as “Provence,” leaving the “Alpes” part to Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes and Hautes-Alpes. But that doesn’t account for the Côte d’Azur, widely assumed to be located in Alpes-Maritimes, and it leaves out Var altogether, which is a sizeable chunk of real estate. Of course you could say, with reason, that the Côte d’Azur covers the shoreline of the entire region; but like Provence, there is no one place or département actually called “Côte d’Azur,” so… maybe it’s more of a state of mind? Also, would anyone in the Alps ever say they were in “Provence” or the “Côte d’Azur”?

The article continues with more useful information about logistical links to help you plan a trip to Provence, some tips on why you should hire a car and places to visit.
