A Summer's Day in January

When all is gloom and doom in the UK; Andy Murray comprehensively beaten in Oz; paedophiles shipping Haiti's children into the Dominican Republic - it is good to be reminded of glorious Summer days.

Take a visit to Wisley Gardens and a visit to the Glasshouse. Not just a splendid array of blooming tropical plants but an unique opportunity to admire beautiful Butterflies.

Incest in France - now a crime!

France never fails to suprise you! It might seem bizarre in this modern age. Surely, there must have been an EU directive!

Anyhow, France finally made incest a crime in its own right yesterday – reinstating it into the country's penal code more than 200 years after French revolutionaries threw it out as a "religious taboo".

Remember Eric?

Remember Eric? That is Eric Cantona, he of the much publicised scissor kick to a "fan", and much worshipped (or hated depending on your perspective) Manchester United player.

Well Eric was often quoted for his bizarre sayings but now Cantona is appearing in Face au Paradis (Facing Paradise), a work by Nathalie Saugeon directed by Rachida Brakni, Cantona’s wife, at the prestigious Théâtre Marigny off the Champs Élysées. Seems that it is not remarkable. Shame!

But here is an interesting fact: Cantona became France’s manager (Beach Soccer, no less) and led the team to victory in the 2005 Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup, beating Portugal on penalties. Is there no end to this man's talent? Apparently, yes!

Is this turning into a folly? Following the channel 5 programme about the lighthouse near Beachy Head on the Sussex coast, there is still no sign of the road. Bizarre. Lovely views but no sign of paying guests.

Property Prospects in France for 2010

The Daily Mail report today:

"In the south of France, 'there has been a shift from people who would go to the Cote d'Azur who are looking farther afield, towards Marseilles and beyond to Languedoc and inland,' says Mr Hawkins.

Buyers are served by Beziers, Carcasonne and Montpellier airports. Chesterton Humberts has a development of 16 stone villas at Uzes - around 50 minutes from Montpellier - Le Hammeau du Temple in Garrigues Sainte Eulalie, from three to five bedrooms at £462,000 to £760,000.

La Ciotat is a small fishing village 20 miles south-east of Marseilles, which Mr Hawkins says would have been overlooked five years ago. It now has two developments, with 180 seafront apartments with views of the Med, from £184,000 to £680,000 (for the three-bedroom penthouse).

The most interest and activity from UK buyers in Europe is going to be in the £1 million-plus bracket, says David King, of Winkworth.

'We have seen quite a lot of activity from UK buyers, but only from £1 million to £1.5 million upwards. Many of the buyers at around £500,000 have fallen away.'

Top Marks for Languedoc Wine

Languedoc wine is growing in popularity across the world ....

"I opted for this Languedoc bottling from ????, made from a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre.

Winemaker Guilhem Dardé sold his family grapes to the local co-op for years before starting to make his own wine in the 1993 vintage. The 2007 offers a rich and silky texture, with very friendly, accessible black cherry, iron and lavender notes, followed by a peppery finish—it’s a textbook introduction to Languedoc reds."

More Going to France: Eurostar posts record customer levels

A Eurostar train heading for Europe passes one of the stranded trains parked near Charing Heath in Kent
A Eurostar train heading for Europe passes one of the stranded trains parked near Charing Heath in Kent Photo: PA

The high-speed train operator said ticket sales - worth £675.5 million - were up by 1.7 per cent to 9.2 million.

Eurostar's route to Brussels saw a 6 per cent rise in travellers compared with 2008, while the Paris service saw a passenger increase of 1 per cent.

Revenue was boosted by 1.7 per cent - helped by a 15.6 per cent year-on-year jump in leisure ticket sales.

But the company reported a "bottoming out" in the business market over the second half of 2009 as the economic environment remained "challenging".

The company faced fury a week before Christmas after thousands of passengers were trapped in the Channel Tunnel in "terrible conditions" when trains broke down due to wintry conditions.

Eurostar apologised unreservedly for the problems and pledged "operational and communication" improvements to ensure trains have "greater resilience" to extreme weather.

An independent review of the problems is due to publish its findings by the end of the month.

Aside from the disruption between December 18 and 20, Eurostar said 95 per cent of its trains arrived on time between February and December 31.

Mon Dieu - no longer in France!

The French have turned their back on the Church; look at these figures to see the staggering collapse:
  • Whilst, in 1965, 81% of the French declared themselves as Catholics, there were no more than 64% in 2009.
  • More serious: whilst 27% of the French went to Mass once a week or more in 1965, down to less than 4.5% in 2009.
Would be interesting to see the figures for the rise in Islam in France!

Moving to the Auvergne

Interesting article about Moving to Auvergne from the suite101.com site. Extract here:

"Auvergne is called the Green Lung of France and is made up of two departments (Puy-de-Dome and Cantal) as well as parts of departments in neighbouring regions. The overlap comes from the modern-day Auvergne being larger than the region it once was.

Auvergne is a tourist attraction for its natural beauty. It is the home of the European Volcano park, (Vulcania) and live volcanoes are hard to resist when it comes to sightseeing. Auvergne is not, however, overly popular with expats, and those who do relocate here are strongly recommended to learn passable French before they arrive as there is no base for English-speakers. While this can make expats feel somewhat isolated at first (figuratively and literally – Auvergne is not the most accessible region in the country) there are benefits."

Blair & his Croneys run out of spin at Iraq Enquiry

Alistair Campbell continues to defend the impossible; there were no weapons of Mass Destruction - he knew it, Blair knew it but they wanted to oust Saddam. As the control freaks at No 10, they needed "evidence" and leant on John Scarlett (what an appropriate name) to sex up the report. They knew it was illegal to wage war so they had to spin the WMD story to try and get UN & Westminster approval.

Come on Alistair and Tony 'fess up; you are digging yourself a big hole (you could use the one Saddam was found in). You'll end up with a worse reputation than Saddam.

We all know the truth. How can Blair live with his conscience - sending our troops and Iraqis to their death? Religious my arse!

Introduction to French Health Care

Useful Health resource:

France offers a vast choice of general practitioners and healthcare specialists, part of its mammoth social security system which, although very expensive and a constant source of funding worry, is one of the finest anywhere.

French employees see about 20 percent of their gross salary, deducted at source, to fund the social security system, referred to as Sécurité sociale. A large part of this goes into public healthcare, to which every legal resident of France has access under the law of universal coverage, la Couverture maladie universelle. Indeed, this right to healthcare is a highly prized value of the French social model.

It makes you laugh ....

You can just imagine ....

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has announced that the wearing of bow ties in public spaces is to be banned.

The Loi Papillon comes into force immediately with a fine of £700 for anyone caught wearing a bow tie in public, except for public carnivals and fetes nationals. Fines, however, would be doubled for wives who force their husbands or sons to wear bow ties in public.

Sarkozy yesterday underlined France’s new hardline stance against the bow tie by declaring that the “noeud papillon is a sign of British subservience that is not welcome in France. The bow tie alienates non-bow tie wearers, and it looks kind of stupid.”

French Property Outlook 2010

Our currency partners at HiFX have issued this report for 2010....

Britons looking to transfer their money abroad have been warned not to expect a quick recovery in the French property market.

Recent research from French estate agent association FNAIM has shown that despite a 5 per cent fall in 2009 prices when compared to 2008, most people do not think that now is a good time to buy or sell property.

The fall in values varies by department and has seen the Alps particularly badly hit.

However, other departments such as Aquitaine and Languedoc Roussillon saw a negligible decrease across the year.

Camus, Veni, Vici

Sarko seems to be trying the impossible with Albert Camus. A right-wing president trying to relocate the body of a left wing hero?

Albert was a French author, philosopher, and journalist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957.

Apparently Sarko wants to Albert's body by moving his body to the Panthéon in Paris, the last resting place of great Frenchmen (and of one great French woman).

It has caused a big storm in France.

So for Sarko I came, I saw, I conquered should read I came, I saw but did not conquer - whereas Camus, Veni, Vici!

Tiger's Missus holes out in Chamonix

Tiger's wife Elin Nordegren headed to a luxury chalet near the swanky resort of Chamonix, Rhone-Alpes to celebrate New Year's and her 30th birthday. Tiger was not in the party - must have been partying at other clubs? Wonder if he got any birdies?

Meanwhile, Nordegren arrived in France a couple of days after Christmas with her twin sister Josefin and five close friends. They stayed in a posh seven-bedroom chalet away from the main resort...

The mother of two spent much of her time inside the €4,000-a-night hideaway.

France gets tough with Internet Copyright Laws

France has introduced tough new laws to prevent breaches of copyright. For example, downloading copyright music or videos will become subject to fines or disconnection from the internet. An agency will be created to chase violators of copyright law.

France hopes it will become a model for the rest of the world!

Sarko says it is a model for other countries around the world that want to protect their creative industries and make clear to ordinary web users that not everything is free.

Good luck!
